As prescription rates for GLP-1 receptor agonists continue to climb, one of the most important messages the nutrition profession is working to communicate is that these medications work best — and safest — when paired with professional dietary guidance. At NutriGreene, we are seeing an increasing number of patients who have started semaglutide or tirzepatide without nutrition support and are struggling with inadequate protein intake, significant fatigue, hair loss and rapid lean muscle loss alongside fat. These are not inevitable side effects — they are largely preventable with the right nutritional approach.
The practical nutritional priorities for patients on GLP-1 medications include first and foremost prioritizing protein at every eating occasion. When appetite is dramatically reduced, there is a risk of consuming so few calories that protein intake falls far below the threshold needed to maintain muscle mass. Aiming for 25 to 35 grams of protein per meal — even when portions are small — requires deliberate food choices: eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, lean meats, fish, legumes and protein supplements when whole-food intake is insufficient. Micronutrient density is equally important; every bite needs to be nutritionally high-quality.
Common GLP-1 side effects including nausea, early satiety and food aversions often respond well to specific dietary strategies: eating slowly, avoiding large fluid intake with meals, prioritizing easily digestible protein sources and temporarily reducing high-fat foods. At NutriGreene, we offer specialized GLP-1 nutrition counseling to help patients get the most from their medication while protecting their long-term metabolic health.
