February is American Heart Month, and this year we want to approach it from an angle that does not get enough attention: the intersection of sports nutrition and cardiovascular health. Whether you are a serious recreational athlete or someone who exercises for general wellness, how you fuel your activity directly affects both your performance and your heart health — and the two goals are more aligned than many people realize.

The dietary pattern that best supports cardiovascular health is also the dietary pattern that best supports athletic performance: rich in complex carbohydrates for fuel, adequate in lean protein for recovery, high in anti-inflammatory foods and micronutrients and low in foods that promote inflammation and oxidative stress. Omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseeds reduce exercise-induced inflammation and support cardiac rhythm stability — particularly relevant for those engaging in high-volume endurance training. Antioxidant-rich foods — berries, leafy greens, beets, dark chocolate — reduce the oxidative burden of intense exercise while delivering the phytonutrients that protect vascular health.

Beet root deserves special mention for its dual relevance to cardiovascular and exercise performance. Studies have found that dietary nitrates in beet root are converted to nitric oxide in the body, which dilates blood vessels, reduces blood pressure and improves oxygen delivery to muscles during exercise — delivering cardiovascular benefits and enhanced athletic performance simultaneously. At NutriGreene, we support clients with sports nutrition and cardiovascular health, and we love helping active clients optimize both dimensions of their well-being through smart, evidence-based fueling.
