Back to school season can be particularly complex for families managing children’s food allergies. The school cafeteria, class snack time, birthday celebrations, school fundraisers and after-school activities all present potential allergen exposure risks that require coordinated management among parents, teachers, school nurses and food service staff. As pediatric dietitians with nearly 25 years of experience — and personal experience managing celiac disease — we want to help families enter the school year with practical, confident strategies.

The foundation is communication: a detailed written allergy action plan shared with the school nurse, classroom teacher, cafeteria staff and any extracurricular activity supervisors. The action plan should specify the allergens, the symptoms that require intervention and the response protocol including whether and when to administer epinephrine. Many schools also allow or require allergen-free zones in the cafeteria or classroom — advocating for these accommodations is your right as a parent.

On the nutritional side, ensuring that a child’s packed lunch and approved snacks are not just safe but genuinely nutritious and satisfying is the goal. Children who feel restricted or different from their peers around food can develop negative associations with eating that persist into adulthood. Celebrating what your child can eat — building delicious, allergy-safe versions of popular lunch items — reframes the allergy management experience positively. At NutriGreene, we provide pediatric allergy nutrition counseling to help families build nutritionally complete, safe and joyful eating patterns for their children.
