Spring Into Mindful Eating: Leaving Diet Culture Behind

As spring approaches and social media fills with posts about ‘bikini bodies’ and ‘summer shred’ programs, it is worth pausing to ask a more important question: what does it actually feel like to have a healthy relationship with food? Diet culture — the pervasive belief that thinness equals health and that controlling your eating is a moral virtue — has been linked in research to higher rates of anxiety, disordered eating, weight cycling and, paradoxically, weight gain over time.

Intuitive eating, a framework developed by registered dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, offers a research-backed alternative. The approach asks us to reconnect with internal hunger and fullness cues, to remove the moral weight we attach to food choices and to trust the body’s innate wisdom rather than outsourcing eating decisions to external rules. Studies published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have found that intuitive eating is associated with lower body mass index, improved psychological well-being and healthier eating behaviors over time.

Moving into spring with a non-diet mindset does not mean abandoning health goals — it means pursuing them through compassion, curiosity and sustainable behavior rather than restriction and willpower. This is especially important for anyone with a history of disordered eating, yo-yo dieting or chronic body dissatisfaction. At NutriGreene, we work with clients to rebuild their relationship with food from the ground up. If this resonates with you, spring is a perfect time to start that conversation.
