Spring cleaning is a tradition for a reason: a fresh, organized space changes behavior. Nowhere is this more true than in the kitchen. Research on food environment design consistently shows that we eat what is accessible, visible and easy to prepare — not necessarily what we intend to eat. A pantry stocked with nutritious staples and cleared of foods you are trying to limit is one of the most powerful, low-effort nutrition interventions available.

Start with the purge: check expiration dates on canned goods, condiments and spices. Remove highly processed snack foods, sugary beverages and refined crackers that you tend to eat mindlessly. Donate unexpired items you no longer want rather than throwing them away. Then restock intentionally: quality olive oil, canned tomatoes, canned or dried beans and lentils, brown rice and quinoa, whole-grain oats, nut butters, canned fish like salmon and sardines, and a variety of spices form the backbone of an endlessly versatile healthy kitchen.

The refrigerator deserves the same attention: position washed and cut fruit and vegetables at eye level. Keep nuts and Greek yogurt front and center. Reserve the less visible areas for condiments and specialty items. A well-organized, well-stocked kitchen does not guarantee healthy eating, but it creates an environment where healthy choices require the least effort. At NutriGreene, we help clients build a kitchen environment that works for them.
