Staying Healthy Through the Holidays: A Dietitian’s Practical Guide

The holiday season begins in earnest this month and, for many people, so does the annual cycle of overindulgence followed by guilt and restriction. Research from the New England Journal of Medicine found that Americans gain an average of one to two pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s — and while that may sound modest, the majority of people never lose that weight, contributing to long-term weight creep over the years. The good news is that thoughtful strategy makes a real difference.
The single most effective holiday nutrition tool is the pre-event meal. Arriving at a holiday gathering hungry almost guarantees overeating. Eating a protein-rich snack beforehand — a handful of nuts, Greek yogurt or a hard-boiled egg — takes the edge off appetite and allows you to make more deliberate choices at the table. At the event itself, surveying all of the available foods before serving yourself helps you prioritize what you genuinely want rather than mindlessly sampling everything in reach.
Equally important is giving yourself permission to enjoy the foods you love without shame. The holiday season is short. Rigid restriction at every gathering is neither realistic nor enjoyable, and it tends to backfire. A more sustainable approach is to choose your indulgences intentionally, eat them slowly and with full attention, and balance festive meals with healthy, nourishing choices in between. If weight management, blood sugar control or cardiovascular health are concerns for you this holiday season, our team at NutriGreene can help you build a practical plan.
