Summer, Body Image and Food: A Dietitian’s Honest Conversation

Summer is a season when body image pressures intensify for many people. Swimsuit season, outdoor social events and the cultural noise around summer bodies can activate diet mentality behaviors even in people who have worked hard to build a healthier relationship with food. As specialists in eating disorders and intuitive eating, we want to address this directly: the anxiety many people feel about their bodies in summer is not a personal failing — it is a predictable response to a culture that relentlessly ties worth to appearance.
The research on body dissatisfaction and eating behaviors is sobering. Studies published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders consistently find that higher body dissatisfaction predicts more restrictive eating, more binge-purge behaviors and worse psychological outcomes — independent of actual body size. Conversely, body acceptance and size-neutral approaches to health are associated with more consistent nutritious eating, better physical activity engagement and significantly better mental health.
Practical strategies for navigating summer with a healthier food mindset include unfollowing social media accounts that trigger body comparison, focusing on what your body can do rather than how it looks and wearing clothes that fit and feel comfortable regardless of size. Continue eating balanced, satisfying meals throughout the day rather than restricting in anticipation of social events. If your relationship with food and your body is causing significant distress, please know that support is available. NutriGreene offers eating disorder nutrition counseling in a compassionate, non-diet environment.
