Heart disease does not take a holiday in November, and neither should your commitment to cardiovascular nutrition. The NutriGreene team sees every day how powerfully diet influences cardiovascular outcomes — and how often patients learn this only after a cardiac event. The good news is that the evidence is clear, and the dietary changes that protect the heart are neither dramatic nor joyless.
The dietary pattern with the strongest and most consistent evidence for cardiovascular protection is a whole-food, predominantly plant-based diet with an emphasis on vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fatty fish and olive oil. This is essentially the Mediterranean dietary pattern, and decades of research support its ability to reduce LDL cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and decrease inflammatory markers — all key drivers of heart disease. Sodium reduction is also a high-priority intervention: the American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams per day, with an ideal target of 1,500 milligrams for those with hypertension.
November’s Thanksgiving table can actually be an opportunity to apply these principles. Turkey, sweet potatoes, roasted vegetables, cranberries and pumpkin are all genuinely heart-healthy foods. The challenge is in the preparation — reducing butter, cream and salt in traditional recipes without sacrificing flavor. At NutriGreene, we help clients build delicious, heart-healthy cooking repertoires that make healthy eating feel like a pleasure rather than a prescription.
