Heart Disease and Diabetes: Why Nutrition Is the Common Thread

February is American Heart Month, and it is a natural time to talk about a connection that does not always get enough attention: the deep overlap between cardiovascular disease and diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes have approximately two to four times the risk of heart disease compared to the general population, according to the American Heart Association. Insulin resistance — the underlying driver of type 2 diabetes — also promotes the inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and lipid abnormalities that accelerate atherosclerosis. In clinical nutrition, addressing both conditions simultaneously is both necessary and, importantly, very achievable.

The dietary strategies most effective for managing both conditions share significant overlap. Reducing refined carbohydrates and added sugars lowers blood glucose and triglycerides simultaneously. Increasing fiber intake through vegetables, legumes and whole grains improves insulin sensitivity and reduces LDL cholesterol. Replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — the fats found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and fatty fish — benefits both glycemic control and cardiovascular risk markers. And achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through sustainable lifestyle changes reduces risk for both conditions substantially.

At NutriGreene, we work closely with clients to develop nutrition plans that address both cardiovascular and metabolic health concurrently. If you have diabetes, prediabetes or cardiovascular risk factors, this Heart Month is a meaningful time to get personalized dietary guidance.
