Summer is one of the best opportunities of the year to build healthy eating habits in children — but it is also a time when routines dissolve and the kitchen fills with popsicles and chips. At NutriGreene, we know that the most effective way to improve children’s nutrition is never through restriction or pressure but through exposure, autonomy and positive association with food.
Research consistently shows that children who are involved in food preparation are more willing to try new foods and report more positive attitudes toward eating a variety of foods. Summer is the perfect season to bring children into the kitchen: washing berries, tearing lettuce, stirring batter and choosing toppings for yogurt parfaits are all developmentally appropriate tasks that build familiarity and confidence with nutritious foods. Visits to farmers markets, picking blueberries or helping grow a small herb garden are extensions of this same approach.
For parents navigating picky eating, food allergies or concerns about their child’s growth, summer can also be a good time to establish — or re-establish — regular meal and snack rhythms. Children thrive on predictability, and structured eating times help regulate appetite and prevent the constant grazing that displaces more nutritious options. At NutriGreene, we work with children and families to address feeding challenges, food allergies and nutritional adequacy with patience and evidence-based strategies.
