Every January brings a flood of nutrition headlines and trending diet plans, and 2022 is no exception. As a practice, NutriGreene spends considerable time distinguishing between evidence-based nutritional developments and marketing dressed up as science. This year, the trends most worth your attention are those grounded in the rapidly expanding research on gut health, personalized nutrition and the role of food quality over food quantity.

Gut health continues to be one of the most scientifically productive areas of nutrition research. The understanding that microbiome diversity is linked not just to digestive health but to immunity, mental health and metabolic function is reshaping how dietitians counsel clients. In 2022, expect to see more clinical integration of dietary strategies specifically designed to support microbiome health — including emphasis on fermented foods, diverse plant intake and reducing ultra-processed foods. The concept of chrono-nutrition — the idea that when you eat matters as much as what you eat — is also gaining traction in the literature.

What we would caution against this year: any diet that requires expensive supplements, eliminates entire food groups without medical necessity or promises dramatic results in a short period. The most effective nutrition interventions are consistently the most boring: more vegetables, less ultra-processed food, adequate protein and fiber, hydration and regular meals. Working with a registered dietitian gives you the individualized guidance to apply these principles in a way that fits your actual life.
