Top Nutrition Trends for 2025: A Dietitian’s Evidence-Based Forecast

As we move into 2025, several nutritional developments are shaping how registered dietitians counsel clients and how nutrition science is evolving. The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee submitted its Scientific Report to the Secretaries of Agriculture and Health and Human Services in December 2024, signaling that updated national nutrition guidance is on the horizon. The report reinforces evidence-based priorities that experienced dietitians have been communicating for years: dietary pattern quality, food processing level and environmental sustainability are increasingly central to how we define healthy eating.
Three areas will define nutrition conversations in 2025. First, GLP-1 medication management will continue to demand specialized nutrition support as more patients begin treatment and the research on optimal dietary strategies during and after treatment deepens. Second, the science on protein — how much, from which sources and how distributed across the day — will continue to evolve, with increasing clarity that current RDA minimums significantly underserve most adults, particularly those over 50. Third, the ‘food as medicine’ movement will accelerate as health systems increasingly recognize that dietitian-led interventions reduce healthcare costs and improve clinical outcomes.
What we always come back to, however, is this: the fundamentals of evidence-based nutrition are not new, and they do not change with every trend cycle. Eat mostly whole foods. Prioritize vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. Consume adequate, high-quality protein. Limit ultra-processed foods, added sugars and excess sodium. Enjoy food with pleasure and without guilt. Trends come and go — these principles endure.
